Paper cut letters
40’×4’, 2019

I did this work when I had a bit of doubt about having OCD in my college days. I wanted to check if it was true and how common it is in my surroundings. It was also an indirect statement about the useless workshop the college was conducting at the time. Please do not care.

Are you still reading this...even after explicitly telling you not to care?! Well, there is an interesting story. When I was installing this, those who read this sign cared about it enough to tell me if these shadow letters were slant or not. Ironic? However, the large-scale, negative letters filling the length of the wall created a sense of dilemma about whether to care or not and each responded in different ways. These incidents with the work made me question if we have started taking the signs for granted and if we care about them at all.

"Maintain silence" "Do not drink and drive" "Go slow" "Tobacco is injurious to health" "Use dustbin" "No parking". There are hundreds of examples one can give where we overlook what has been pointed out explicitly through the signs for whatever reasons. The question is whether to still keep trusting the impact of signs for the betterment of our society or if it is time to find alternative ways!
